It's the time of year when all we want to do is stay cozy inside and wear our fleece PJ's and watch Christmas movies with a cup of coffee in hand ( at least thats my ideal winter day)! But of course this time of year leaves minimal time for lounging with the ten million holiday functions to go to and prepare for. 'Tis the season for festive cocktail parties and group dinners! Each occassion calls for a different dress code based on who you're celebrating with. The last thing you want to have to worry about on-top of gift-buying and keeping up with the every-day routines, is finding the perfect trendy outfit to wow you friends/co-workers/ family/ or date this holiday season! I've rounded up some go-to looks for three possible party circumstances that make outfit planning a little bit easier.
A Night out with Co-workers
For a night-out with co-workers try and keep it simple and chic! Leather has been a HUGE trend this year and is getting even more popular this winter season! I used the leather trend in a work-appropriate way with a high-waisted a-line leather skirt and paired it with a tie-neck bouse (another upcoming trend for the season). Pairing it with other neutral accessories and shoes helps tie in the chic, cool-girl look you have going. I grabbed an oversized clutch with a black sparkly detail (have to be a little festive), some ankle strap heels, and fun statement earrings to finish off the look. Adding a minimal pop of color like the oh so popular blush and wine hues of season, gives it the perfect extra touch to make sure youll have a stand-out outfit! At the bottom of the page I've featured some items that would be perfect to help you complete this same look.
The Family Gathering
My favorite thing about the holidays is the big family gathering when you get to see everyone together for the first time in a while and you get to swap gifts, eat the BEST food, and laugh at old crazy family memories. Even though these are people that would love you the same if you showed up in sweat-pants, you want to show the family you've got it all together (or are at least pretending to) with an adorable classic outfit thats on trend and family appropriate. There's no better time to try out a tulle skirt than the holidays and this outfit is a perfect way to wear it! Since the family-gathering usually involves heavy amounts of food, this outfit allows plenty of room to fully enjoy your favorite family dishes. For a warmer option pair the skirt with a long sleeve turleneck like the one I included at the bottom of the page! To finish off the look I kept the same accessories as the last outfit and swapped drop earrings for some smaller blush-colored ones. This outfit won't make you compromise your comfort and will definitely place you as the family fashionista for the night!
The Holiday GNO (or date night)
Whether you're single or dating someone theres always the special "holiday night out" you take with your girlfriends or significant other! This is the perfect night to wear something that makes you feel extra hot while you have a fun dinner, most likely followed by a trip to the bars. I LOVE a Little Red Dress for the holiday season to mix up my staples and add a little color. I've had this one for 2 years now and it has been the perfect go-to on nights out when I didn't know what to wear! Throwing on a cool leather jacket over it to give the look a perfect edginess that balances out the bright red. Throw in an animal print contrast with either your shoes or clutch and you've got a hot little outfit for your holiday date night or girl's night out! I've included a couple options below for some cute red dresses I've found and a fab pair of animal print booties!
The holidays are always such a whirl wind with the many occassions and gatherings we have to attend! Hopefully these outfit ideas and tips helped you with any "what do I wear" dillemmas this holiday season! Below I've included some items I think would be perfect to help you complete these looks! 'Tis the season for soft-knits and sweaters! I can't lie, this is one of my favorite times of year to get dressed because a) you get to layer and b) everything is so soft and cozy! I know sometimes it can be hard to find the perfect essentials that are comfy, stylish, and protect you in the cold, which is why I have compiled a few of my favorite things that help me get through these upcoming chilly seasons!
My first recommendation is finding a scarf that is going to work for you in many occasions and that is neutral enough to be styled with most winter coats. I've had this one for almost 2 years and the simple plaid design has allowed me to dress it up or down from occasions like going to the ballet or a morning walk to class! Also having a pop of color, like the orange in this one, is great for those of you who like to have a little flare in your accessories when adding to an LBD or simple outfit like mine above. The best part though is finding a scarf with some length to it so you can wear it long, like I did above, to add a layer to an outfit or so you can double wrap when it gets extra cold! I also wore it with a little black dress and floppy hat and booties for a nicer look, but can easily through it on with a sweater and ripped jeans for something cozy. Unfortunately I got mine 2 years ago from Urban Outfitters and it's no longer in store, but I've found some great options that I've put below for you all! The versatility of a scarf is what makes it so great as a winter accessory, and investing in one that will last you through the years, like I did, is totally worth it!
A chilly weather look wouldn't be complete without a great soft-knit hat to throw on on the extra bitter days! I just got this one from The Gap and I am so so in love with it! I'd been dying for one with a little pom-pom on top because I think it's way more fun, and this hat was exactly what I was looking for. In the winter that dry air can do the worst things to my hair, I'm sure many can relate, so having a hat to put on, on those especially bad days is exactly what I needed! One of the reasons I love this one is that it doesn't make me feel like I'm about to go tobogganing or that I HAVE to be in some tundra to wear it. It's a great accessory for a casual outfit on a nippy day, and keeps your hair in-check while looking cute!
My next winter essential is a chunky sweater you can throw on with any outfit. The sweater featured above is my go-to sweater for the winter/fall! Having a good chunky knit turtle-neck is perfect for throwing together an effortless outfit that still looks polished. I just tuck the front into my jeans to give it a flattering, less-boxy shape, and voila you've got an easy cute outfit for the winter months that doesn't involve leggings and baggy clothes! It can be worn with more than just jeans or leggings though. I've thrown it on over a flowy minidress with tall boots to add some warmth or pair it with a skirt and tights and tuck the front in for a cute evening look too! The best part about this sweater is that I randomly found it at a consignment store 2 years ago, but I found one from H&M that I think you all will love and it has the same versatility and comfort as the one I have!
My favorite winter essential is the going-out sweater. Just because you want to look cute and wear something flattering, doesn't mean you have to sacrifice comfort and warmth! This sweater from The Serendipity Shop is proof of that and I actually wore it twice in a span of 4 days on the week that I got (no shame)! Each one they make is a different sweater or thermal so everyone gets a unique patter/design/or color which I think is really cool. Its such an easy swap from day-to-night with this sweater, you can keep that hat and daytime winter accessories and swap them out for a cute little bag and some earrings for night! I'm carrying my small Louis Vuitton clutch cross-body with it because I love the tan strap's contrast with the outfit, but I've founds one other great options that I've included too! This lace-up sweater also goes perfectly with cropped black jeans and black booties for even more of an evening look. I seriously can't get enough of it and it's the perfect staple going-out sweater for your closet during the colder seasons!
These are some of my essentials because they are so versatile and work from day-to-night so effortlessly. I've shown you two looks with the simple swap of a sweater and adjustment of some accessories and each can take you from an afternoon of walking around to an evening outfit the girls! The hat, scarf, and both sweaters are perfect winter staples to have in your closet during these cold seasons!
I know what you're thinking, Pants? For fall? GROUNDBREAKING. But pants have taken quite a fun turn this season and it doesn't have to involve wacky patterns or crazy colors, its all about silhouette and flattering cuts! I recently had to do a double take and head back to Dillard's to buy these amazing wide-leg high-waisted pants. First of all they're blush colored (small obsession with this neutral shade). Even better though they're under $70! These pants were $60 and seriously are so versatile.
I could actually live in these blush pants, wide leg for comfort and high-waist to keep it all in (thnx). They can be styled casual or for going out so so easily! I tried it with two different looks. The Black Sweater Crop Top from The Serendipity Shop will also definitely be a staple in my wardrobe for these upcoming winter months. I paired it with pants above for a going-out look along with the taupe choker from them as well (in my Instagram from Tuesday). I wore this look on Saturday to the horse races at Keeneland, then to an outside function and then to an anniversary dinner and it worked for every occasion from noon to 10pm! It also is so incredibly comfortable the black sweater crop is so soft, you have to snag one for you're wardrobe.
Now I've paired the pants with plain tee for a more casual look that would be perfect for afternoon shopping or a lunch/ casual dinner! I took the "boyfriend chic" look seriously and actually stole one of my boyfriends shirts (sorry Jack) and I'm obsessed with how soft it is! It's actually been so great for pairing with dressy bottoms to make a look more casual. I'd even recommend throwing on slides for more comfort in the look! You could definitely still dress this up with a chunky statement necklace and a clutch though! So in love with the versatility of this look.
The pants pictured below, I got this past summer from Target and literally wore them at least once a week to my internship. They are so flattering for people like me ( 5'4.75" Holla!) who need a little extra length. The waist doesn't come up super high but covers just the right amount for the elongated/flattering look. These were actually a part of Target's newer women's line "Who What Wear" and they have really brought some great, more fashion-forward affordable pieces to the women's section!
These striped pants could absolutely still work with either of the tops from my previous look, but I wanted to pair them with something that shows off a figure without making you feel stuffed and uncomfortable! This top is from Urban Outfitters and was my go-to going out top last winter. It is also incredibly soft and comfortable but is still kinda of sexy and makes you feel good with the lace-up front. I'm small-chested and it still works for me too! I loved pairing this all black look with a contrasting white purse for a pop. I picked up this white bucket bag last spring from the Michael Kors store on sale. Its way more convenient than my Jet-setter tote but can still fit my wallet and a couple other items in it (I hoard things for all occasions in my purse so I need the space). Both looks also include my fave heels from Target which I also picked up earlier this summer! I wore them for 8 hour work days and lived to tell the tale (retail work days aka standing the whole time). The wood heel on them is my favorite part because it can make them casual too if I want to go that route. Can not forget the final touch, my favorite sunnies from Rayban in a Rose Gold/Pink tint. The perfect extra touch to any casual outfit, but also works with most looks including all of the ones featured above!
While you may have come in thinking I'm crazy for featuring pants as a winter/fall staple, I hope you gathered some tips on how to make them look more versatile and trendy. These work for so many different occasions and will always make you look a step trendier and so so comfy! Also a special thanks to Sarah Flynn for the amazing photos, she's been working with me on shoots and is so great!! Thanks for reading loves!
